Martese received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where he served as a Student Attorney within the Civil Rights Litigation Initiative and a Graduate Student Instructor for the Anthropology and International and Comparative Studies Programs. He received his B.A. in Italian Studies from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the IMP Society.
