Giacomo Bertelli is a senior associate in our Technology, Media, Communications, and Commercial Group, bringing extensive expertise in Information Technology and Internet Law. He collaborates closely with some of the world's top Internet and technology companies.

He has developed a wide-ranging knowledge of the TMT industry and is involved in internet service provider liability, platforms, freedom of expression, data protection, and online copyright. In particular, he focuses on litigation before courts and regulatory authorities in relation to ISP liability and data protection. Moreover, he assists multinational technology companies in launching new products and services, ensuring regulatory compliance and guiding them through complex legal landscapes.

Giacomo graduated in law from the University of Genoa in 2017. He later obtained an LL.M. in Law of Internet Technology from Bocconi University. Before joining Hogan Lovells, Giacomo worked for two years in a law firm specialising in commercial law, one year at the European Patent Office in Munich as legal advisor to the Chief Technology Officer and one year as legal trainee in one of the world's largest technology companies. In 2025, during his time at Hogan Lovells, Giacomo completed a secondment at Google.

He is currently a Postgraduate LL.M. Candidate in Technology, Media and Telecommunications Law at the Queen Mary University of London.

Giacomo is fluent in Italian and English and has an intermediate knowledge of Spanish.

Representative experience

Representation of digital platforms in landmark litigation shaping the interpretation of EU digital regulation, including the GDPR, the Digital Services Act and intermediary liability rules.

Assistance to major tech companies in proceedings before the CJEU concerning the interpretation of intermediary provider liability and of GDPR principles on the processing of personal data.

Assistance to the major online search engines in relation to privacy issues and freedom of speech.

Advice and assistance to platforms in contentious and non-contentious proceedings, including regulatory investigations initiated by national authorities.

Advising online platforms on legal risks arising from AI-driven services, automated content moderation and emerging compliance obligations under EU digital regulation.

Regulatory advice and support to marketing teams for launching new tech products and services, ensuring compliance and smooth market entry.
