Name: Laura Sugar Sport: Paracanoe & Para Athletics Length of career: 7 Years Top 3 accolades: 1) World silver medallist (paracanoe 2019) 2) 7 x European medallist (para athletics between 2014-2019) 3) European silver and World Cup silver medallist (Paracanoe 2019) How you got into your sport: I've always loved sport and participated in a range of sports at a young age. I was born with Talipes and had my ankle fused at a young age however didn't let this hold me back in my sporting ambitions. I found a love for hockey at secondary school and ended up getting selected to play for Wales at U18 level, then working my way onto the Senior ranks. I did not know that my disability made me eligible for Para sport until watching London 2012 and saw someone with the same foot as me which then inspired me to take up Para sport. This led to making the Para athletics team in 2013 and it was the best thing I've ever done. I have since transferred to the paracanoe team in 2019 (while still competing in Athletics) after being talent spotted and hopefully I can have a successful career in both sports. Your proudest moment in sport: I obviously am proud of winning medals, especially the first one in athletics and first in canoe which I will always hold dear, however one memory sticks out. Standing on the start line at the 100m final in Rio 2016 I took a moment to forget all about the nerves and just smiled to myself saying "I've done it", I ran my best ever 100m and came 5th. Favourite / iconic moment in sporting History: For me, watching the GB hockey girls win gold in Rio was a huge sporting moment, to come from behind as underdogs and win on penalty shuffles was an intense watch. They have inspired a new generation of hockey players who believe! Also, I remember watching the England Rugby team win in 2003 and although I was still quite young it gave me a belief that anything is possible and I still use that positive outlook today. Your most inspiring sporting hero / figure: Jessica Ennis-Hill! Her attitude to life and balance around training and life always inspires me. She has overcome many hurdles and still comes out giving her best every time. Where do we follow your progress: Instagram: Laurasugar1 Twitter: @Laurasugar1 Wakelet: https://wakelet.com/@LauraSugar |
