Smart Market Entry: Hogan Lovells advises Calisen on the financing of its €100 million smart metering partnership with Energy Metering
Led by partner Dr. Carla Luh, global law firm Hogan Lovells has advised Calisen on the financing of its landmark smart metering partnership with Energy Metering Germany (EMG), a competitive Meter Point Operator established by Octopus Group.
The transaction comprises a €100 million strategic partnership for the market entry and large-scale roll-out of intelligent electricity meters in Germany. It represents a major step in Calisen’s international expansion and a significant milestone for the German smart metering sector.
In addition to advising on the overall transaction, Hogan Lovells advised Calisen on the full financing of the project, including a senior financing facility of EUR 84.8 million. The financing structure was specifically tailored to enable the nationwide deployment of smart metering assets under an innovative and long-term Meter Services Agreement between Calisen and EMG. Advice on this matter, including the market entry in Germany, was also provided by Hogan Lovells in an earlier stage.
The transaction establishes a scalable financing and operational framework for the rapid roll-out of digital metering infrastructure across Germany and sets a new benchmark for future smart metering partnerships in the German market. This project is expected to play a pivotal role in accelerating the digitalisation of Germany’s energy infrastructure and in supporting the country’s transition towards a more data-driven and efficient energy system.
Dr. Carla Luh, Head of the German finance practice at Hogan Lovells, and her team combine deep expertise in complex financing structures with extensive experience in large-scale infrastructure and energy projects. Drawing on its strong finance and project advisory capabilities, the team supported Calisen’s market entry in structuring and implementing a financing framework tailored to the regulatory and commercial requirements of the German smart metering market and the nationwide roll-out.
